Amazing Vegan Cookie Bakery in Tokyo, Kyoto & Fukuoka | ovgo Baker

Updated: Feb 5

ovgo Baker is THE place to go in Tokyo, Kyoto or Fukuoka if you love cookies! This vegan American-style bakery has all sorts of different plant-based cookies as well as other baked goods like muffins and scones. You can find several of their stores across Tokyo, but they have a store in Kyoto and in Fukuoka as well. It is also possible to buy their cookies at various other cafés, for example at CIRTY CAFE, or online. Gluten-free options are available.

I recently went to their bakery in Higashi-Nihonbashi (ovgo B.A.K.E.R Edo St. EAST) after seeing lots of pictures on how cute the bakery looked on Instagram as well as a co-worker recommending it to me. I also visited ovgo B.A.K.E.R Meiji St. in Harajuku.

About ovgo B.A.K.E.R

According to their website, ovgo B.A.K.E.R is an American cookie bakery founded in 2019 with the intention to make many people happy by offering a wider palett of foods to choose from, all while aiming for environmentally friendly practices under the slogan "Doing Good Tastes So Good". That's why the cookies are organic, 100% vegan, and even gluten-free options are available. Like this, also people with lactose or gluten intolerance, people who have to reduce their fat intake or don't eat certain ingredients due to religious reasons can enjoy delicious and cruelty-free baked goods.

As ovgo's concept is to produce environmentally friendly cookies and allowing people to easily incoperate yummy plant-based options into their lifestyle, people who love delicous sweets can feel happiness regardless of dietary restrains. In order to archive their goal, the cookies are not only 100% vegan which is more environmentally friendly than using animal derived ingredients, but ovgo B.A.K.E.R tries to buy organic, local ingredients as much as possible.

While ovgo B.A.K.E.R started out in 2019 with a popup store and then as an online shop during corona, they have come a long way. In 2021, their first store ovgo B.A.K.E.R Edo St. was opened. ovgo B.A.K.E.R kiosk (closed permanently), ovgo B.A.K.E.R Meiji St., ovgo B.A.K.E.R BBB and ovgo B.A.K.E.R Cookie Factory Shop followed, as well as ovgo B.A.K.E.R Nijo St. in Kyoto and P P P in Fukuoka.

Additionally, their cookies are sold at lots of other cafés and bakeries as well. By the way, they also created ovgo B.O.M.B.E.R, which basically are really cute characters who each stand for an environmental or social problem to tackle.

Because ovgo B.A.K.E.R Edo St. was closed for a while due to renovations, ovgo B.A.K.E.R Edo St. EAST was opened instead. Since it is the store I went to, this blog post is based on my experience there. However, because the original store ovgo B.A.K.E.R Edo St. was re-opened on January 19 2024, ovog B.A.K.E.R Edo St. EAST closed down recently. As the food is the same, I decided to include Edo ST. EAST in this post anyways.

My Experience

ovgo B.A.K.E.R Edo St. EAST

How I mentioned before, I recently visited ovgo B.A.K.E.r Edo St. EAST. What made me decide to go there in oppose to one of their other branches was the beautiful design of store! The front looked super pretty and retro, just as if it was straight out of an older movie playing in New York. It was all red with a cute red and white awning above the windows and you could see the inside from the outside. The white tilling around was is also quite fitting. They really did an amazing job at making the bakery look American.

When entering, I was greeted with the sweet smell of freshly baked cookies and the diagonal counter was filled with the most beautiful cookies, scones and muffins and they are placed on retro-like trays. It was possible to either do take-out or it in at their cozy café space on the top floor.

The white, wooden furniture and the cute decoration made the space feel really cozy. The large window front allowed a nice view of the street below.

For drinks, they didn't have coffee drinks, but lots of different teas, soda, some juice boxes and specials.

The staff was really friendly and we talked a little bit while I was waiting for my drink to be ready.

However, this branch seems to have closed down on December 30. 2023 because of the renewal open of ovgo B.A.K.E.R Edo St.. But since the food is the same, I decided to introduce it anyways.

ovgo B.A.K.E.R Meiji St.

ovgo B.A.K.E.R Meiji St. can be found inside LaForet in Harajuku, so it is the perfect spot to grab a sweet little treat while shopping. The menu is very different from ovgo B.A.K.E.R Edo St. EAST. While most cookies are the same, they additionally have ones with icing, banana bread and banana split, which perfectly fits the Harajuku vibe.

You can do take out, or eat in at the cute small café space. If you eat in, you have to buy one drink.

And you can pay both by card or by cash.

About the Food

At ovgo B.A.K.E.R Edo St. EAST, I chose the iced caramel tea, matcha marble cookie and the Christmas muffin for eating in and got the Snicker doodle cookie for take-out.

Ice Caramel Tea

Normaly I don't drink sweet teas, but I chose it because it sounded interesting. And I am really glad I did! Even though it was just tea without any milk, it tasted just like sweet caramel milk, just fresher instead of being creamy. It was really delicious!

Matcha Marble Cookie

The matcha marble cookie had a beautiful green color with some sugar icing on top. It was very sweet, but the sweetness was balanced out nicely by the bitter matcha powder. I really appreciated  the strong matcha taste, as matcha sweets often have just a slight matcha flavour. The cookie had the perfect texture: it was crispy on the ouside and at the same time was super chewy.

Snicker Doodle Cookie

The snicker doodle cookie had the same great texture as the matcha one. Because of the name, I kinda imagined it to taste like snickers bars, but instead it had a cinnamon taste, which was very yummy as well!

Holliday Muffin

Because I went there on December 24, I had to try their Christmas muffin (unfortunately I don't remember the correct name). It was quite large, super fluffy and chewy. I've never come accross a vegan muffin this fluffy before, so I always assumed it was impossible to get that kind of texture without eggs. It had raisins inside, which tasted like they were pickled with rum and the muffin was topped with creamy vanilla pudding, dried carnberries and powdered sugar. It was super delicous and really satisfied my craving for something christmassy that day.

At ovgo B.A.K.E.R Meiji St. I chose the maple cinnamon latte, Sweet Strawberry Scokie and the Cherry & Choco Scokie.

Sweet Strawberry Scokie

This cookie was rather soft and topped with strawberry jam and whipped cream, which was an amazing combination! I definitely recommend it.

Cherry & Choco Scokie

This was a rather thick and crispy chocolate cookie with icing and colorful sprinkles on top. It was pretty sweet, but good!

Maple Cinnamon Latte

The latte was pretty good! It was sweet and a bit caramelly due to the maple sirup and had a slight cinnamon taste.

All in all, I really recommend visiting ovgo B.A.K.E.R for some delicous, vegan cookies and ohter pastries! I personally definitely want to check out some of the other branches as well and hope that their cookies are gonna be sold at even more places in the future, so that everyone, including non-vegan people, can enjoy them any time.
